THE UNDERGRADUATE ECONOMICS CLUB AT UIC:
INFORMATION FOR GUEST SPEAKERS
The Undergraduate Economics Club at UIC is a student organization that seeks to provide a meaningful extracurricular activity for students interested in economics. About 20-30 undergraduate students regularly attend the weekly meetings. Most Club members are economics majors; some have majors in other business or social science disciplines.
The students have a strong interest in presentations that address substantive issues related to economics and business, as well as those that describe the activities of private firms and government agencies in the Chicago area. In addition, they value learning about various career paths available to economics graduates, as well as specific examples of internships and entry-level positions. Information regarding advanced education (e.g., MBA and MA programs, Law School) is also of interest to many students.
Students especially appreciate hearing a bit about the personal trajectories of our speakers – how they became interested in the work they are doing, how they initially got their first job, and their work experiences since then. They also greatly value words of advice – e.g., how to succeed in the workplace, skills that are important for the particular career path.
The Club meets every Wednesday during the Fall and Spring semesters. The presentations are always very informal; students often ask questions and make comments along the way. Professor Lehrer, the faculty advisor to the club, attends the meetings. The President of the Club, a student elected by the members, chairs the meetings.
As to equipment, we have a projector and PC for powerpoint presentations (please let us know if you will need the equipment in advance). In preparing the flyers announcing our weekly events, it helps us to have your position within the firm/ agency and, if appropriate, a title for your presentation.
We meet in room 850 University Hall. UH is the tallest building on campus; it is located at 601 S. Morgan Street, at the corner of Morgan and Harrison.
The most convenient parking for our guest speakers is the Harrison Street Parking Structure (1100 West Harrison, between Morgan and Racine). The Halsted Taylor Parking Structure (760 West Taylor Street) is another possibility. If you drive to campus, please give your parking ticket to the Club President, and he/ she will validate it for you.
